What I Have Been Reading

I recently read, The Container Victory Garden by Maggie Stuckey, and not only does she share stories about historical victory gardens, but she offers her guidance to those that want a garden but do not have the outdoor space by sharing her experience with container gardens.

This book is for beginners, and I must confess, I am still a beginner when it comes to growing my own food, but I wanted to share a fun suggestion that Maggie had. One of her rules is to have no bare dirt in her containers. If there is a bare spot she will plant something that does not need a lot of room, like a garlic clove, and then harvest garlic scapes.

As I have been preparing the donations sent to us from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, I found that they sent us the perfect tomato plant for containers. This tomato is called Orange Hat and it is described as: “[these] extra-dwarf bush plants reach just 6-9 inches in height but the plants are wildly prolific, offering oodles of tiny orange orbs that burst with fruity, sweet flavor. This is the perfect indoor or patio tomato, comfortably fitting in a 4 to 6-inch pot.” I am going to have to give them a try!

Thank you for being here,

What is a makerspace?

Have you heard about our Teen Makerspace Camps? The library has partnered with the Community Center to offer this amazing opportunity for teens to get hands-on experience learning tools like 3D printing, laser engraving and more.

The best part of a makerspace is its ability to foster creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning. The Sandy makerspace provides a physical environment where teens can come together to create, experiment, and innovate using various tools and resources.

In summary, the best part of a makerspace is the holistic and collaborative learning environment it provides, enabling individuals to explore, create, and innovate in a supportive community.

Alder Creek - Gary Buhler

I have been working as a painter for more than 30 years and this early piece is Acrylic on Canvas and depicts Alder Creek from under the Highway 26 bridge looking south. There is a nice series of small falls there which was the source of my inspiration.  I used to fly fish on that creek and love the cascading water. The image source material is from photos I had taken on the location. The City council had some money in the budget for artwork and this one was chosen for the library.  Alder Creek was the source for much of the water for Sandy which gives it local interest.   This spot is located east from Sandy up the highway and not far from the Ivy Bear Restaurant.  I am pleased to have this piece in my hometown and like to stop in and take a look at it when I visit family in the area.

-  The essence of water as I see it is the cascading stream - intimate, reflective, transparent, and ever-moving.  The stream gives life wherever it goes and I find that water is a good metaphor for life, as it is beautiful, essential, and dynamic.  We are drawn to it and I can see the Creator's hand in it.  My wish is that many will find inspiration and hope in my work.-

You may wish to see my website: garybuhler.com for more information and current work.

Seeds in SPACE!

Choctaw Nation Space Flown Seeds to Grow Learning

I was recently introduced to this article and thought it would be fun to share. Boeing has sent heirloom seeds belonging to the Choctaw Nation to space. They will be delivered to the ISS and spend several months before returning to earth. Once back, the seeds will be planted next to their non-space traveling counterparts. The students involved with this project will hypothesize what will happen with the space traveling seeds.

“The story of the seeds’ travel and stay on the space station, and the results of the students’ experiment, will be incorporated into the middle school earth-sky STEM curriculum being created for the NASA Science Activation program Native Earth | Native Sky (NENS) at Oklahoma State University. After the culmination of the seeds’ project, the curriculum will be available for free as an open educational resource in early 2024.”

Call for Volunteers - Library Landscaping

As soon as I began with the seed library, I started dreaming about how to utilize the garden box space that we have in the back. This quickly grew to include all of the library’s landscaping. My dream is to turn our landscaping areas into pollinator friendly, low maintenance spaces that are primarily native plants. And lucky me, our director shares my dream.

So far we have a few volunteers that are just as excited to partner with us to make this dream a reality. If you are interested in joining our team, whether it's helping in the garden beds, or with sourcing plants, we would welcome the opportunity.
