Author Talk with Martha Jones Ph.D.

PBS Books will host a virtual engagement event that will feature an Author Interview with Scholar Martha Jones, Ph.D., to discuss her soon-to-be-released book: "Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All" and a Panel Discussion with New York Times best-selling Novelist Tayari Jones and Pulitzer Prize finalist Poet Evie Shockley, Ph.D.
This Facebook Live event will be moderated by Senior Executive Producer Fred Nahhat of Detroit Public Television and will explore women’s fight for the right to vote, African American women in the suffrage movement, and ongoing challenges to voting throughout American history. Dr. Jones will highlight aspects of her new book, the panelists—Tayari Jones and Evie Shockley—will provide their unique perspectives on the topic and how they address these important themes in their work, and audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions. The event will last approximately one hour. This event will be offered in collaboration with hundreds of libraries across American, cultural institutions, and local PBS stations.
This event is part of an ongoing Trailblazing Women Virtual Series, which highlights amazing stories of American women, that was developed and launched by PBS Books to complement the programming launched by PBS to mark the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. By highlighting “Trailblazers,” PBS Books commemorates the fight for women’s suffrage in the US and the stories of modern women, who continue to shatter the glass ceiling and transform modern history. All three women— Martha Jones, Ph.D., Tayari Jones, and Evie Shockley—in our upcoming conversation are trailblazers themselves, and PBS Books are honored to host a conversation to showcase their work and ideas.
