Seeds in SPACE!

Choctaw Nation Space Flown Seeds to Grow Learning


I was recently introduced to this article and thought it would be fun to share. Boeing has sent heirloom seeds belonging to the Choctaw Nation to space. They will be delivered to the ISS and spend several months before returning to earth. Once back, the seeds will be planted next to their non-space traveling counterparts. The students involved with this project will hypothesize what will happen with the space traveling seeds. 


The story of the seeds’ travel and stay on the space station, and the results of the students’ experiment, will be incorporated into the middle school earth-sky STEM curriculum being created for the NASA Science Activation program Native Earth | Native Sky (NENS) at Oklahoma State University. After the culmination of the seeds’ project, the curriculum will be available for free as an open educational resource in early 2024.”


Call for Volunteers - Library Landscaping

As soon as I began with the seed library, I started dreaming about how to utilize the garden box space that we have in the back. This quickly grew to include all of the library’s landscaping. My dream is to turn our landscaping areas into pollinator friendly, low maintenance spaces that are primarily native plants. And lucky me, our director shares my dream. 


So far we have a few volunteers that are just as excited to partner with us to make this dream a reality. If you are interested in joining our team, whether it's helping in the garden beds, or with sourcing plants, we would welcome the opportunity.
