January Seed Library News

Happy New Year, Gardeners!

As 2024 has come to a close, I find myself reflecting on how grateful I am to this community. Thank you for welcoming me with a spirit of generosity and encouragement as I complete my first full year as your local seed librarian. The enthusiasm a lot of you bring is contagious and it motivates me to make more connections, and to continue to grow our resources. Here's to another great year ahead!

Upcoming Events

Seedy Saturday - Our Annual Seed Swap!

This year marks 6 years that we have had a seed swap on National Seed Swap Day! I am hoping to make the seed swapping/donations a little easier on you by providing you with the donation slips ahead of time. You can print them out, or just make sure some of this key information is included with your seeds. These help us with basic information that we need to have: plant name and variety, and the year seeds were harvested. Donation Labels

The author is very passionate and advocates for seed saving and seed swapping, to the point where she will tell us how to partner with a public library to have a seed library! Since we already have that portion down, feel free to skip ahead to where she shares the best types of seeds to save and share and the tools you will need to accomplish it.

The authors of this book are the founders of Adaptive Seeds. They are an Oregon farm who produce seeds that have been adapted to the PNW and other northern, short-season climates.

My goal is to be able to provide some of their seeds in our seed library this year.

To learn more about them, visit their website: https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/

This book is pocket sized and so full of useful information. I wanted to keep carrying it around with me but I realized that wasn't doing anyone any good.

"Saving Seeds is a clear and winsome introduction to the essentials of seed saving, from seed selection criteria to harvest and storage tips. It also addresses the role of seed-saving communities: local swaps, seed companies, friends and neighbours and even how the Internet can support this time-honoured practice."

What I've Been Watching: Native Seeds: Supplying Restoration

This documentary shows the different organizations that have started up to help restore native habitats through preserving native plants and saving their seeds. Prioritizing the preservation of native species has become increasingly important as wild spaces have been significantly reduced, and with wildfires and other natural disasters destroying habitats, having the plants and seeds on hand to restore the area is a must.

You can check the DVD out from the library or you can watch it, for free, on YouTube through their channel: https://ser-insr.org/native-seed-film
