Deep River: a novel by Karl Marlantes follows the joys and travails of the children of a Finnish family who leave Finland to avoid the brutality of the Russian military during the turn of the last century. They make their way to southwest Washington state living by their wits as loggers, farmers, and fishermen.
We learn about the struggle to obtain decent working conditions that eventually lead to unionization of workers. Mr Marlantes is an excellent writer. I was riveted to the story not only because it is set locally, but also because it sheds light on the story of my own family heritage.
