40th Anniversary of Mount Saint Helens eruption

Chris Wilhelmi, Assistant Director.
"What I remember is that the eruption of Mount St. Helens was not an out of the blue occurrence but sort of a slow motion coming eruption. We knew it was coming for weeks, with scientists studying and projecting, much debate about when and how it would happen.  Much like today, there were people that didn't believe the experts and said it was all blown out of proportion. (sorry for the pun) Since it hadn't erupted yet, experts didn't know what they were talking about and it either wasn't going to happen or if it did, then oh well, we've lived through other things.

I lived on top of a hill outside of Happy Valley and we drove to Willamette National Cemetery and watched with a perfect, safe view of the eruption. You could see the ash plume go up and east but before too long the top of the mountain disappeared in clouds of ash. We watched the news about the towns east of us and how bad it was. We had some ash for a long time, and weather changes would bring more.

Curt (my Husband) drove a garbage truck at the time and he remembers that they needed to constantly change the air filters to keep the trucks running."

Do you have a memory of the eruption?
Where were you?
